Heat tracing is the problem which always occurs in industrial producing: Due to the environmental temperature is lower, it makes the liquid in pipeline and container been freezing and cannot be delivered. In this situation, we need to replenish heat outside of pipeline and container to prevent the liquid in pipeline and container being freezing. This method is named as heat tracing. Ways of heat tracing we usually used are: steam tracing, hot-water tracing and electrical heating. Let’s introduce self-limited temperature electic tracing band for heat tracing briefly.

Heat tracing for process pipeline and tanks containers in our country mostly applies traditional steam or hot-water tracing. Electric heat tracing is using the energy of electic heat to supply the heat missed in process flow, and then, to maintain the most reasonable process temperature for flow media. It is a high-tech product, electric heat tracing releases heat equally through length of pipeline or large area of tank container. It is different from the electric heat tracing which heat load highly centred in one point or a small area; the electic heat tracing has low temperature gradient and long setting time, is suitable for long run. The heat (electric power) it needs is largely lower than electrical heating. The electric trace heating has advantages like high thermal efficiency, energy saving, simple in design, easy installation in construction, non-pollution, long working life, can realize remote control and autocontrol, etc.. It is the technique developing orientation to substitute steam, hot-water heat tracing, and is also the energy conservation project popularized greatly in our country.
Selecting materials for electric heating cable in electric resistance type is mainly up to the temperature which maintained heat tracing materials. For example, the sustainable temperature for high-temperature mineral material insulated electric heating cable reaches 427 degrees. These electric heating cable in electric resistance type are not influenced by temperature in pipeline and weather conditions, then its uses got certain limitation, the production cost is comparatively higher.

With the development of matreial science, the electric resistance conductor material also developed: Use electric resistance with polymer semiconductor plastics which is disposed with radial and has PTC performance. This kind of semiconductor plastomer has special capability of molecule memory. It can adjust electric flow automatically according to the change of environment temperature, therefore derived a new product – self regulating electric tracing band. It overcomes the insecurity trouble of temperature couldn’t be voluntarily restrained occurred in electric-type electric heating cable, and it’s more convenient to use.
